MISSION
New Leaders for New Schools ensures high academic achievement for every student by attracting and preparing outstanding leaders and supporting the performance of the urban public schools they lead.
PUBLIC EDUCATION IN NEW YORK CITY
Since 2001, New Leaders for New Schools New York has built a strong partnership with the NYC Department of Education (NYCDOE) to raise student achievement in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens by recruiting, training, and supporting the next generation of outstanding school leaders.
New Leaders for New Schools believes that ensuring success for all children, including New York City, is not only possible, but critical to our societal and individual success. The New York City public school system is the largest in the United States, with over 1,400 schools and more than 1.1 million students enrolled each year. But for too many of these students, New York City's public schools do not provide adequate preparation for the future:
- 4 in 10 students do not meet or exceed the standards in mathematics or English Language Arts.
- 4 in 10 students do not earn a high school diploma on time.
- Of those students who graduate, only about one-third received Regents diplomas, which is one indicator of readiness for college.
- The situation is far worse for African-American, Latino, and low-income students, who on average score several grade levels below their peers.
New Leaders for New Schools' New York City program envisions a day when every child will graduate from high school ready for college, career and citizenship.
New Leaders for New Schools' New York City program envisions a day when every child will graduate from high school ready for college, career and citizenship. By 2020, 90-100 percent of students will will reach that goal and contribute to the success of our society. We believe a high-performance urban school demonstrates the following qualities:
- Data-Driven Teaching and Learning: drives continuous improvement in effective teaching and learning in every classroom and establishes a professional learning community.
- School Culture: establishes a consistent student and school culture focused on high achievement for every student as well as youth development and safety, and a self-correcting mechanism driving clearly articulated beliefs and desired behaviors.
- Operations and Management: establishes effective and efficient organizational and management structures.
